IMET2000-Pal Training; Psychiatry Training Program for Physician Scholarship, Jordan University of Science and Technology, (2020) Dr. Mamoun Basila

My name is Mamoun Basila. I’m from Hebron, Palestine. In 2014, I graduated from Cairo University in Egypt as a general doctor. Since then, I have been working as a general practitioner.

When I was a child, I was thinking a lot about how I could help my society in my way, because being under the control of the occupation, we face a lot of pressure and hardships every day in our life. Therefore, I decided to choose a speciality that would help people in Palestine.

IMET2000 gave me that opportunity. When I first saw the announcement of the scholarship, I immediately thought of applying to it as I was always amazed at how fascinating our mind is, and how psychiatry as a speciality will help me to understand human brains deeply.

In addition to the fact that Palestine needs more psychiatrists, it does not have so many doctors in this speciality. Also, I believe it is an important field that requires a deep understanding of physical and mental health. Traumatized patients with mental issues are increasing at a steady rate due to our occupation with only a few doctors to help with such cases.

I always wanted to raise awareness about this particular problem and to link it with so many organic diseases that we do not usually find an evident cause to them but a psychiatric condition. I believe that through this scholarship, I will be able to expand my knowledge and to help my people the way I always wanted. Thanks to IMET2000, I will always be grateful for them to give me such an opportunity.
