Introduction:
Advanced providers sometimes use a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure device, commonly known as CPAP. CPAP is a non-invasive treatment method intended for patients who are experiencing respiratory distress but are still able to maintain their own airway. CPAP was originally used for people who experience obstructive sleep apnea to increase pressure in the upper airway and prevent tracheal collapse during sleep. However, it has been found to be a great tool in the pre-hospital setting and decreases the need for more invasive airway management, such as intubation. Although effective, endotracheal intubation can be difficult in the field and contains some complications and disadvantages. If used early enough, CPAP can prolong the need for intubation or even replace the need for it altogether. It is important to remember though, that CPAP only treats the symptoms of respiratory distress; it does not fix the main problems the patient is suffering from.
The outline training course are divided into four sections: (i) Background, Introduction to CPAP, Respiratory Distress, Indications and Contraindications; (ii) CPAP mechanics, Choosing the Correct mask Size, CPAP Setup, Oxygen and CPAP, CPAP Application; and (iii) CPAP Risks, Monitoring, Discontinuation, Training and Implementing; and (iv) Training-of-Trainers TOT instructor model.
Who Should Attend?
Physicians and nurses from governmental and private hospitals.
Aims and Objectives:
This Training will be organized in-cooperation with Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP). In this training, you will develop the knowledge and skills to use of disposable CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) masks of assisting a patient’s respiration without intubation.
By the end of this training course, you will be able to:
- Assess a basic medical patient regarding to CPAP.
- Describe general CPAP indications and contraindication.
- Explain CPAP application techniques.
- Identify, assess and formulate a plan to stabilize a patient with a CPAP.
- Describe the most common complications and what you can do for them as an EMT.
- Explain TOT instructor model.
Date and Time: Wednesday, August 26th, 2020- 18:00- 20:00.
Venue: Via ZOOM.
